Laure Subreville - Durousseau Cutting Tools

Residence from November 5, 2018 to March 31, 2019 - Durousseau (Cenon, 33)

It is through the articulation of the interests shared between the Durousseau Outils Coupants company , its employees and the artist Laure Subreville that Zébra3 designed this residency project with the help of the DRAC Nouvelle-Aquitaine. It opens up the opportunity for Laure Subreville to develop a project based on the specific human context of the company. This artistic and experimental approach initiates a new relationship between the company's teams and their own work tool and reciprocally brings to the artist a body of elements able to integrate his creative processes.

Located in Cenon, the Durousseau Outils Coupants company has specialized since 1935 in the sharpening and sale of professional tools and woodworking machines. More than a workshop, the place is a real crossroads of information, placed under the sign of exchange and conviviality. It is the image of the work that his team has been carrying out for several years: seeking to create networks between the various suppliers and customers.

This family company is going through a special moment in its history, the choice of the SCOP structure was chosen for its transmission and all the staff will soon become members of the company and collectively lead to the destiny of their work tool. It is from this human context that Laure Subreville, a young video artist imagines the creation of a work involving all of the company's 10 employees.

From the first meeting of the company with the artist Laure Subreville, a fertile human context emerged, prefiguring an environment favorable to the installation and the creation of artistic forms. For this company, the opportunity to be able to offer an artist a new research context is also that of creating a specific artistic object born out of mutual artist / company curiosity. It could also become, through its form (video), a singular trace in its individual and collective history.


This meeting between Durousseau Outils Coupants and Laure Subreville, beyond the question of the production of a work, is the opportunity to initiate a dialogue between the artist and the employees of the company, and in the same spirit initiate knowledge sharing. This residency proposal is based above all on reciprocity, a time of exchange of several months during which the employees of the company will have the opportunity to discover contemporary creation, and the artist will be able to base his project on a daily presence with seasoned professionals.

This residency will give rise to several restitution times throughout 2019. Within the company, then during the inauguration of La Fabrique Pola in Bordeaux.

Field Recording

En 1970 avec son album Presque rien (N°1), Luc Ferrarri capture le levé du jour sur le port d’une île croate. Il s’agit d’une restitution réaliste, la plus fidèle possible, d’un village de pêcheurs qui se réveille. Par ce geste simple, de mise en retrait, le compositeur affirme que le paysage sonore est une partition préexistante à appréhender comme de la musique. Il se fait le médium d’événements et de phénomènes concrets qui définissent divers environnements sociaux-culturels. Nicolas Degrange échange l’enregistreur sonore du « field recordist » contre des « shaped-canvas » mais adopte la position d’écoute, d’attention et de documentation intrinsèques aux audio-naturalistes ou aux ethnomusicologues. À travers la peinture, la photographie et l’installation, il se penche sur certains éléments et expériences constituant le terrain qui l’accueille. En utilisant le détournement et l’appropriation l’artiste tisse des liens entre les mondes (peinture/sculpture, privé/public, matériel/immatériel) et dresse un paysage où la peinture revêt le rôle d’intermédiaire ou de témoin ouvrant à la discussion et à l’échange


Nicolas Degrange est diplômé d’un Bahcelor of Visual Art de l’Ecal en 2013, ainsi que d’un DNSEP des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux en 2017. Il vit et travaille et à Paris. Nicolas Degrange est co-fondateur du collectif after affect et membre de l’atelier ChezKit (Pantin).
